The British Broadcasting Corporation has issued an apology for a question deemed inappropriate by one of its journalists.
The reporter in question posed a query regarding homosexuality to Ghizlane Chebbak, the captain of the Moroccan team, during a press conference held at the ongoing Women’s World Cup.
According to Daily Mail, it was reported that the journalist, who reportedly works for the BBC World Service, asked Chebbak on Sunday, “We know that gay marriage is illegal [in your country]. Are there any gay players in the team? And what is it like for them?”
The question was allegedly dismissed by a FIFA representative who intervened since it had nothing to do with sport.
“Sorry, this is a very political question, so we’ll just stick to questions relating to football,” the representative said.
However, Chebbak dismissed the query and emphasised to the journalist that they were not there to discuss politics before the Fifa representative cut the journalist off.
The BBC acknowledged that the question was inappropriate, a spokeswoman for the broadcaster stated in response, according to the Daily Mail.
“We had no intention to cause any harm or distress,” the spokesperson added.
