The FCT Emergency Management Agency has issued a stern warning regarding accountability for disasters occurring within the Federal Capital Territory.
The acting Director General of FEMA, Ibrahim Sabo, delivered this warning during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
Sabo revealed that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had established a committee with the mandate to take action against individuals or organizations that disregard fire safety measures within the FCT.
This committee is poised to enforce accountability and uphold safety standards within the territory.
He emphasized that those found culpable for any disasters would face legal consequences, with charges filed against them in court.
In a significant policy shift, FEMA will no longer solely respond to emergencies, particularly in cases of building collapses or fire incidents.
This development underscores the FCT’s commitment to preventing disasters and holding those responsible for such incidents accountable for their actions.
“In the case of fire incidents, presently, His Excellency, the honourable minister, has constituted a committee to ensure that we don’t experience these fire disasters and the measures that will be taken against all those that have violated the safety regulations regarding fire disasters.
“It will also interest you to know that the administration now has started taking action. If any disaster occurs within the FCT and anybody is culpable, he is going to be charged. There will be a measure that will be taken against that person or organisation.
“We will no longer just respond to emergencies, take care of people and it goes like that; no. Somebody will have to take responsibility, especially in cases of building collapse and fire incidences.”
