A yet-to-be-identified has been shot dead on Saturday by soldiers during a protest in the Apata area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Punch Metro reported Friday that protests erupted in the state following scarcity of fuel and the new naira note which has led to long queues and agitation across the nation.

A video circulating on social media showed the blood-soaked lifeless body of the deceased on the street of Apata, in Ibadan.

As of the time of filling this report, all efforts to reach the police proved abortive and there has been no official statement from the Nigerian Army concerning the incident.

On Friday some aggrieved residents of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on Friday trooped to major roads protesting over the hardship imposed on them by the new naira notes and persistent fuel scarcity.

Meanwhile, this publication recalls that Friday’s protest saw protesters block major roads of the ancient town, including the Iwo Road Interchange, the frontage of the State Secretariat at Agodi.

Protesters also stormed the government secretariat on Friday and vandalise.

The protest spiralled out of control on Saturday as some individuals suspected to be hoodlums went about attacking buildings including a commercial bank.

Reacting to the development, Governor, Seyi Makinde, suspended his campaign activities due to protests in Ibadan.

The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatubosun, who announced the suspension in a statement, said the governor had directed all campaign activities of the PDP to be put on hold.

“As a mark of honour to citizens and residents of Oyo State, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has directed that all campaign activities of the party at all levels be suspended until further notice,” he said.

“Governor Seyi Makinde’s love for his people necessitated this unprecedented move, at this time.

“We urge all residents and citizens of the State to remain calm as we navigate through this difficult period together.”

This publication also reported that the governor released free buses for residents to ease the hardship caused by the scarcity of fuel and cash.
