Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency to come to the aid of the residents whose properties were damaged by a heavy storm that accompanied the first rain of the year experienced in the town last Thursday.
This was contained in a statement by Oluwo signed by bus Press Secretary, Alli Ibraheem.
He described the damage done by the storm as monumental as “about 40 electric poles were reportedly destroyed,” thus preventing electricity supply to Iwo and hampering economic activities in the town.
The statement further read in part, “St. Mary Grammar School, Iwo, has the roof of about 10 classrooms completely removed by the storm. I commiserate with my people who had their properties damaged by the rainstorm heralding the new season.
“I’m worried about the monumental destruction of the public and private properties in Iwo. I appeal to the National Emergency Management Agency for their intervention.
“About 40 concrete electric poles were broken. St. Mary Grammar School, Iwo, had the roofs of 10 classrooms removed. Oluwo Central Mosque’s roof and Iwo Customary Court’s roof were also affected. Hundreds were rendered homeless, and shops and goods inside were destroyed.”
